Highly porous
Like all other NanoBone® technology products, the NanoBone® | block is produced in the sol gel process. The material is therefore unsintered and has an extremely large inner surface area (c. 84 m²/g). Thanks to the large surface area, autologous proteins from the blood enter the nanopores and cover the entire inner surface. The synthetic block also behaves differently from an autogenous bone block after being soaked in blood. For the physician, this means a different handling method during surgery (see Recommendations for use).

Harms et al. have demonstrated NanoBone®´s great osteoconductive potential. The augmentation material acts as a conductor. A protein-rich organic matrix forms which promotes the growth of connective tissue.

Götz et al. have demonstrated the osteinductive nature of  NanoBone®. They were able to prove that osteblasts and osteclasts are attracted and differentiated. Ectopic bone formation was observed in a test with Göttingen minipigs.
